Don’t be your kids (unwitting) drug dealer!

February 4, 2026 By Insurance Experts

Too often, adults are the “unwitting suppliers” of prescription medications for their children. The problem lies in how prescription meds kept in medicine chests and purses that are too easy to reach. Kids are naturally curious and ignorant of the consequences of trying something that doesn’t appear to be dangerous.

The National Family Partnership’s (NFP) campaign uses high-quality advertisements, posters and educational materials to make adults aware of how kids can access their meds without their knowledge.  Lock Your Meds Day is designated as the time for parents to make a pledge to talk to their children about the dangers of taking medicines not specifically prescribed for them.

It’s crucial to let them know about the harm to their immediate health and how experimentation can lead to addiction. www.lockyourmeds.org is a site where visitors can learn more about how to approach their kids plus get answers to any questions they may have.

What is an Association Plan?

February 2, 2026 By Insurance Experts

An Association Plan is group plan of individual policies with the intent to take an advantage of the “rule of large numbers” which in simple insurance terms means that the more people you have in a group, the  the age and health risk factors of the individuals within the group are averaged out spreading out the risk and ultimately reducing the premiums compared to rating each person individually.

Association Plans typically have value added benefits to include supplemental accident, supplement critical illness coverage, other health-related goods and services such as telephonic/video conferencing with board certified physicians and other types of telemedicine. Doctor-on-Demand is an example of telemedicine.

“Brush And Clean In Between!”

February 1, 2026 By Insurance Experts

Every February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness of good dental health in children and how this affects them later in life. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums when people are young does have lasting benefits. For one thing, it leads to fewer and shorter visits (and probably less tears!) to the dentist. It also produces prettier smiles!

Even more important, good oral health prevents more serious illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory infections. When kids establish good habits early on, they’re more likely to avoid these and other poor health conditions as adults.

Currently, thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers and educators lead the effort. This year the theme is “Brush and clean in between to build a healthy smile.” Through press releases and distribution of materials, the push is to promote good oral health to children, their caregivers and teachers across the country.

Getting the kids involved adds weight to the movement. To do this, fun activity sheets that include coloring and puzzles are available online. These sheets can be found at www.ada.org.

Do You See What I See?

January 31, 2026 By Insurance Experts

Cataract surgery is a common procedure – but do you really know what cataracts are? They occur when the lens in your eye becomes cloudyand impairs your vision. Chances are, if you live long enough to become a senior citizen, you’ll have the need for cataract surgery.

Here’s the good news…

Traditionally lenses with cataracts are removed and replaced by a clear lens to correct/improve vision. Significant changes in technology now make the procedure more effective and safer. While some surgeons still use a scalpel to make the incision, more often, a laser integrated with 3D imaging is used for better precision. The pulsating beam softens the defective lens and makes it easier to remove. Easier removal makes the whole procedure safer.

Intraoperative wavefront aberrometry is another advance that allows surgeons to choose the best lens power for individual patients. Doctors may also be able to correct astigmatisms which are imperfections in the shape of the cornea. Don’t worry if you can’t pronounce this – just know you have a better chance of getting the best vision possible with it.

Finally, there’s the possibility of developing eye drops to prevent or even reverse cataracts – but they are still in the experimental stage. What’s important is how cataract surgery continues to get easier and safer for everyone who needs it.

A Look At The Latest Advances In Cancer Research

January 28, 2026 By Insurance Experts

One thing scientists have learned after years of study is that cancer isn’t just one disease. While a lot more research needs to be done, scientists have made great strides. One area of focus is our immune systems. Another is genetics.

Our immune systems work to protect us from foreign bodies that can hurt us. We just need to be able to identify these to fight them. We now know that cancer can sometimes hide which prevents our immune system from finding the cancerous cells. New immunotherapy techniques help our immune systems attack the cancer by 1) Preventing the cancer from hiding and 2) Boosting our immune response against cancer.

Genomics is the study of changes to the genes in your DNA. It’s giving doctors important clues about how your cancer will act and with this knowledge, they can make the best determination for treatment. It works by looking for changes called mutations in certain cancer genes. Once found, doctors can better diagnose the cancer, predict the outcome and decide on the best drug or treatment. They can also monitor how well the treatment is working.

These new developments mean faster identification and diagnoses to help treat cancers more quickly and easily which often leads to a cure.
