What’s The Latest Advice On How To Prevent Heart Disease?

When it comes to heart disease prevention, little has changed. High cholesterol is still a factor, as are smoking and obesity. Now when it comes to keeping your heart healthy, think of these four words – sleep, activity, diet and stress.

Let’s start with sleep. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Adequate sleep helps keep your blood pressure, weight and blood sugar under better control.

Stay active! Exercise has many benefits including strengthening your heart and improving circulation. Like sleep, it helps you control your weight, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It also lowers your cholesterol.

Eat a healthy diet. By limiting saturated fats, foods high in sodium and added sugars, it’s easier to maintain a healthy weight, lower cholesterol and keep your blood sugar level steady.

Manage stress. Traditionally, common ways to cope with stress include smoking, overeating and consuming too much alcohol – all of which work against your heart. Instead, meditate and focus on things that make you calm. Again, this keeps your blood pressure lower, maintains a healthy weight, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Do these four things and you’ll not only stave off heart disease, you’ll enjoy each day more!

“You have breast cancer.” Wait, what?! How could this happen to me?
Mammography found my tumor at an early stage, and for that I’m grateful, but I didn’t know about thermal imaging then so I will never know how much sooner my cancer could have been detected. Thermography, or thermal imaging, can detect cancer and other health issues earlier than mammography, but many health insurance plans do not cover it, although more are starting to cover it now. Studies have shown that thermography is twice as effective as mammography (98% vs 50% effective) without the harmful effects of radiation and “squishing.”
Some lifestyle choices you can make to lessen your chances of getting cancer, particularly breast cancer:
    • maintain a healthy weight
    • eat real food (as Michael Pollen says “eat food, not too much, mostly plants”)
    • exercise regularly (even just a 30 minute walk 5 or more days a week)
    • meditate and minimize stress
    • limit alcohol use to 1 drink per day or less
    • don’t smoke
    • avoid toxins
I thought I was healthy, but I had just retired from a very stressful job and hadn’t been eating well or exercising regularly. I encourage you to educate yourself and understand the preventive aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as I did. I no longer use toxic household cleaners or personal care products, get an annual full-body thermal scan, eat a mainly plant-based diet, exercise and meditate regularly. Can brushing your teeth prevent a heart attack?

The link between oral health and systemic health has been well established through evidence-based research.  Brushing and flossing don’t just make your smile look good. When you establish a daily oral health routine, you prevent pathogens that cause conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes from entering your system.  Poor oral health is also tied in with aspiration pneumonia.

Good oral hygiene not only helps prevent illness – but acts as an alarm for diseases already in progress.  The condition of your teeth and gums can be an early indicator of systemic diseases that have not yet manifested symptoms. Early intervention is the best way to a full recovery.

The American Dental Hygienists’ Association designates October as the month to increase public awareness on the importance of good oral hygiene. Go to www.adha.org for more information on how a daily oral health routine contributes to enjoying the best health from head to toe.
